IMPROVING MEMBER’S WORKING CONDITIONS AND PUBLIC SAFETY

DSAM is a registered not-for-profit corporation, founded in 1978.  DSAM is a bi-partisan legislative lobbying and training organization dedicated to improving the professional careers and working conditions of our members.  We have successfully monitored legislation to ensure only quality law enforcement and corrections legislation is passed, making Michigan a safer place to live, and making sheriff’s departments a better place to work.  DSAM is not a labor organization that engages in the collective bargaining process.

ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE

DSAM is governed by an executive board operating underby-laws and rules of business.  The executive board is comprised
of the president, four (4) area vice presidents, treasurer, secretary,
sergeant-at-arms, and district representatives.  All board members
serve on a voluntary basis.  DSAM employs a full-time executive director.

The vice presidents are elected from four vice presidential areas
(A.  U.P./northern Mich; B. mid-Mich; C. W/SW Mich; D. SE Mich.).
All four vice presidential areas have five districts which are separated based by county.

One district representative is elected to the executive board for the firstone hundred (100) regular members within that district.  A second district
representative may be elected to the board if there are one hundred seventy-six (176) or more members in
that district.

The district representatives from each respective vice presidential area elect their vice president.

The president, treasurer, secretary, and sergeant-at-arms are elected at-large by members of the executive board.

MEMBERSHIP FEES

Can you afford the price of one energy drink or a cup of coffee per month to join DSAM?  That's right, for $1.66 per month ($20.00 per year) you can become a member of the state's only organization dedicated to advancing and protecting your career.  If your group joins in mass you will receive a discounted group membership rate of $15.00 per year per member.  Effective representation in Lansing on issues critical to law enforcement, local corrections, and emergency dispatchers could not come at a lower price.  Head over to the Deputy Sheriff's Association of Michigan website to become a member!

Full membership in DSAM is open to all employees of a Michigan sheriff's department including part time, seasonal, reserve officers and those employees who have retired under honorable conditions.  You will receive a membership card and window decals when you become a member.  A sheriff, undersheriff, chief deputy, and members of the public may hold a supporting membership status at a cost of $20.00 per year.

DSAM is a unique organization from the standpoint that we speak with one voice, working toward our common goals.  We have no "rank structure" so to speak.  Therefore, a patrol officer or local corrections officer has equal footing with any supervisor within our organization and on our executive board.
