Custer County, Oklahoma, Sheriff Mike Burgess resigned Wednesday just as state prosecutors filed 35 felony charges against him, including 14 counts of second-degree rape, seven counts of forcible oral sodomy and five counts of bribery by a public official. The allegations include everything from forced sex by the Sheriff himself to Deputies in his jail hosting wet T-shirt contests with the female inmates. It is shocking for me to believe that something like this could happen in this day and age, but, as with anything else, we must remember that allegations are simply that. It is rare to find me writing about the alleged wrong doing of other Deputies, Officers or even Sheriffs, but I couldn't let this story go without sharing it.
