You can protect yourself though by using a special piece of software to make sure your hard drive gets completely wiped clean before handing it over. Basically what this software does is rewrite over the hard drive with other data that is of no use to criminals that might try to recover it. One of the best secure file removal software sets out there, Eraser, is available for free and can even securely remove sections of data if you don't need the entire hard drive wiped clean. Among other methods, Eraser can be setup to use the overwrite method used and recommended by the Department of Defense for all DOD computers. Click here to download Eraser and try it out for yourself. Comments (0)

Getting rid of an old computer or hard drive can also mean handing over sensitive information to whomever ends up with it. Even if you delete all the files on your hard drive anyone with the right software can recover information from it and have access to your sensitive, personal information left burned onto the hard drive. Poeple have even been victims of identity theft from computers recovered by criminals from dumps and electronics recyclers.
